Description
he Species Protection Index (SPI) measures a region’s success in adequately representing species in its protected area network. An SPI score of 100 means that the area-based conservation targets are fully met for all assessed species, a value of 50 that on average species are half-way to sufficient representation in conservation areas (i.e. many species are insufficiently protected). SPI is calculated as average representation target achieved across assessed species, with each species’ contributions to this average weighted by the region’s stewardship for it (region-endemic species weigh most).
Long-Term Objective
